The knowledge derived from the DIAD Group Activities will contribute to the objective to make the European Community the most advanced knowledge based society by 2010 as well as to enhance the quality of European products in the field of Nanotechnology.

This sector is directly followed by the DIAD R&D Department, in Turin and Toulon, where the most advanced research projects in this field are carried out. The new nanotechnology production processes together with the knowledge on nanostructured and intelligent materials will materialise in a competitive advantage with respect to the competitors.
The winning approach is to unite European competencies, even through European financement, in nanoscale engineered materials as well as coatings and surface treatments and production technologies to focus on development of superior components and systems at lower costs.

The use of novel materials, coatings and surface treatments, self-lubricating parts in dry-running systems with significant performance will lead to important gains in areas such as running accuracy, high-speed, increased performance-size ratio and lifetime with zero maintenance. The activity also aims at deriving environmental and quality of life benefits due to reduced resources consumption and lower noise and vibration.

Moreover rapid tooling and rapid manufacturing are an important topics for future competitivness in the aerospace and automotive manufacturing scenario.
Objectives of the overall are of strategic importance to Europe, as strong industrial groups in the United States as well as in Japan and very rapidly China threaten to reduce European market share to dangerous levels.
